Lot 99. Hans Speidel. (1897-1984). World War II German general. Speidel served in the French campaign of 1940 and in August became Chief of Staff of the military commander in France. In April 1944, Speidel was appointed Chief of Staff to Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, the Commander-in-Chief of Army Group B, responsible for the defense of the French Atlantic coast. He may have saved Paris. He did not rush to meet the invasion force when Rommel was in Germany on June 6, 1944. Speidel, was appalled by Nazi racial policies. He was involved in the July 20 Plot to kill Adolf Hitler, and was one of the inner circle of conspirators. Spidel was the only high ranked uniformed conspirator to survive Hitler’s assassination attempts. He was a good friend of Beck, Chief of the Army who resigned to protest Hitler’s policies. After the war, he was the first German commandeer of NATO ground forces.
