Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961). American novelist and author of such American classics as A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and the Sea. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. His terse, journalistic style influenced a generation of writers. He committed suicide in his home in Ketchum, Idaho on July 2, 1961. Other members of Hemingway’s immediate family also committed suicide, including his father, a brother, a sister and later his granddaughter Margaux Hemingway.
