Ossie Davis (1917-2005). African-American actor, film director, and activist. His acting career, which spanned seven decades, began in 1939 with the Rose McClendon Players in Harlem. He made his film debut in 1950 in the Sidney Poitier film No Way Out. Modern audiences know Ossie Davis from his many appearances in Spike Lee movies, from Do the Right Thing (1988) to She Hate Me (2004). He was marriedto actress Ruby Dee.
