Denton A. Cooley (Born 1920). Pioneering American heart surgeon. In 1969, he became the first surgeon to inplant an artificial heart. Cooley and his associates have performed more than 100,000 operations - more than any other group in the world. Winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award. Cooley and the legendary heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey had a professional rivalry that lasted more than 40 years. They made amends in 2007.
Signed 6.5x3.5 FDC honoring the Doctors Mayo, postmarked September 11, 1964. Black ink signature adding "M. D." and the date "9.28.09" along with original sketch of a heart.
